Oh Canada. Your digital freedom is going down the river (without a paddle)

Any Canadian reading this blog, or any person interested in Digital Rights should take 10 minutes to listen to the clip at the bottom of this page. It’s an interview on CBC on the new DMCA laws that are trying to be introduced in Canada. It’s up to Canadians to take a stand and tell them NO. 

Michael Geist explains how to help here. I highly recommend reading this short summary from Boing Boing.

Here’s a few notes on what happens if the law gets introduced: 

  • If you share anything (by uploading or downloading) it’s illegal
  • You can’t unlock a phone if you take it overseas and want to use it
  • You can’t copy your CDs to MP3s to listen to on your MP3 player
  • It is illegal to download a song to your iPod and play it at a party
  • You can’t play a DVD you purchased in Europe
  • It will be illegal to purchase ink cartridges that are not made by your printer manufacturer
  • If you cars computer is “locked” it is illegal for an independent auto shop to diagnose it

    yeah, this is f***ing BS (sorry for the harsh words). I don't quite understand how it got to this point. They are already really harsh in Europe with those laws, at least they are reasonable and actually protect copyright owners. But I feel that some companies clearly take it to far and no-one questions them.

    Here is an example: I missplaced my cellphone a few days ago. So I pull out my old cellphone and go to get a new SIM card for it. "That will be $40" What? Did I just hear this right, a piece of plastic with a chip in it costs $40. Furthermore, without that chip I can't make any calls and therefor an money to my cellphone company. I called them up and they very well knew that it is BS to pay $40 for the SIM card. So they give me one for free. Here come's the best: it says right on the card: This card is property of Rogers Wireless Partnership? What was a supposed to pay the $40 for? They didn't say it's a fee. No, this was my "buying" the card.

    Well, we will all have to start living more on the edge with all those laws that we will accidentally break!

    Thanks Hans. I think it's crucial that we tell everyone we know about this.
    My blog post includes links for ways you can fight this. I only wish I was
    still in Canada to help fight it. I can't believe it will actually be WORSE
    than the State's laws.

    I also suggest you listen to the most recent episode of Search Engine on CBC
    for an interview with Jim Prentice the "mastermind" behind this:

    Search Engine has been following the story for some time. It is truly an
    awesome show too.

    They mentioned on Search Engine that there are 60+ thousand already
    subscribed to the Facebook Group against the DMCA. I'm not that impressed
    with the number, considering Toronto alone has over 1 million users.

    Let's get the word out and local MPs called before this actually gets
    passed!
