Interview with me about Twitter in the Tennessean

August 7th, 2008 · Comments

There’s a great story in Monday’s Tennessean on Twitter: Micro-blogging network has Nashvillians atwitter. The piece includes some excerpts from an interview the author conducted with me. I think she did a great job writing this, props to Vivi Hoang (what’s your Twitter name Vivi?).

While hanging out at Fido in Hillsboro Village one day, Dave Delaney and a friend spied a man they immediately knew was an actor; they just couldn’t place his name.

So the two friends surreptitiously took a photo of the man and used Delaney’s laptop to upload it to the Web and post a link to the image on Delaney’s Twitter page. Within minutes, he had responses from subscribers to his Twitter feed identifying the man as William Devane, who has starred in shows including Knots Landing and 24.

“The thing with Google is it’s not people-powered,” said Delaney, 36, who lives in Nashville and specializes in traditional marketing as well as new media.

Delaney’s Twitter page counts more than 1,500 followers.

“It’s a great way to reach out to the community really quickly,” he said. “It’s very two-ways. If you’re strictly just posting things and not responding to people, people won’t be as quick to follow you. Once you build an audience and then have friends within Twitter, that’s when it gets exciting.”

The comment section has a good discussion on Twitter and micro-blogging in general. It’s also funny to see how people already pass judgment on new technologies without even giving them a try. Funny in a sad kind of way, but it does remind us of the dreaded fishbowl.

The article includes a link to my short video on Twitter for Newbies. I created it some time ago for Twitter users to send to their friends and families interested in taking Twitter out on a test drive. It’s a very basic tutorial on how to get started on Twitter, but I often feel that’s what’s needed to help people get going.

Oh, and I don’t hate Twitter anymore. I’m still super annoyed, but hate might have been too harsh a word. :-) The word trust is much more applicable given the recent turn of events.
