It’s not every day a band turns 30 years old. Sure there are some bands that celebrate their birthdays, but there’s often a fundamental problem - they suck now. There’s also those bands that may have been around 30 years ago, but suddenly reunite for a tour. These sudden reunion tours reek of a need for money, or of hell freezing over (or both).
I am writing this post about a band that have never “sold out” and who have never stopped touring. It’s a band that still plays tiny clubs and who charge a mere few dollars at the door, so that kids of all ages can afford to see them play. A group who fight for change and who promote action.
I’m talking about one of the most important punk bands of all time, from my very own home and native land. DOA.
I’ve seen DOA countless times in Toronto through the years, but a highlight was seeing them in a tiny bar in Edinburgh, Scotland in around 1999 or 2000. It was cool, because front man Joey “Shithead” Keithley and I were able to sit on a pool table before the show, drink some beers and talk about home. I was at the show alone and a little homesick at the time.
Happy 30th Anniversary DOA. Your milestone is one most bands never dream of seeing, congrats! I only wish I could be there to ring in 30 with you.
